Woman charged with stealing from rescue group

KEESEVILLE — A Saranac Lake woman is charged with stealing more than $20,000 from Champlain Valley Search and Rescue K9 Unit.

Shannon C. Bresett, 42, business manager and co-founder for the Keeseville-based organization, was arrested Tuesday by State Police on a charge of third-degree grand larceny.

Police were notified Aug. 30, 2016, about a suspected theft from the nonprofit organization.

An investigation revealed that Bresett made several thousand dollars’ worth of personal purchases using bank accounts opened under the organization’s name, State Police said Wednesday in a news release.

Bresett was arraigned in AuSable Town Court and released on her own recognizance.

She is due back in court at 10 a.m. Feb. 24.

Bresett could not be immediately reached for comment.

Champlain Valley Search and Rescue is described on its Facebook page as ” a non-profit search and rescue team specialized with the working dog and support personnel to search for and rescue lost or missing persons.”

The organization has participated in numerous local searches, including efforts to track down lost hikers and snowmobilers.
