North Country search & rescue co-founder charged with stealing from group

A Saranac Lake woman has been accused of stealing more than $20,000 from the Champlain Valley Search and Rescue K-9 in Plattsburgh.

New York State Police said Shannon Bresett, 42, was arrested and charged with third-degree grand larceny from a non-profit organization.

Bresett was the business manager and co-founder of the group.

Investigators said she made several thousand dollars-worth of personal purchases using bank accounts opened under the organization’s name.

The search and rescue team specializes with dog and support personnel to search for and rescue lost or missing persons in the North Country.

“We are specifically trained to assist with land and water searches, as well as natural or man made disasters in which people may be trapped or missing,” according to the group’s Facebook page.

Bresett was arraigned in the Town of Ausable Court and released. She was scheduled to appear again on Feb. 24.
